one more thing: if you'll notice, not once did i mention all the historically verified atrocities the church has committed in the name of helping the poor. i don't have to. the past 20 years of church history gives the lie to your position, even if you don't like it, can't accept it, and won't admit it. so again: you lose this argument, hoss. no shame in that. somebody has to lose the argument, right? today it was you.

some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you, hoss. you have my sympathies hoss. though rare, when i lose an argument, i don't like it either--a piece of friendly advice: when you lose an argument, prepare better for the next time, though in this case, there's not much you can do. you're defending monsters.

i'm an atheist. i have faith in myself, and faith in you-that you'll become a better person, forget about being a better christian. the only way to be a better christian is to be an ex-christian. being a better person is easy, though it might sting a bit the first time you try it.

"what they do for the poor on a daily basis?" oh. you mean, not auctioning off even 1% of the vatican's holdings to feed said poor people? you mean overpaying church cronies for 'nativity scenes'? you mean dressing the pope in enough pope gear to feed a family of 4 for a year? you mean telling ppl w/too many kids they already can't feed to skip using contraception? or do you mean brainwashing their children with fairy tales? how about forcing people to sit through indoctrination masses before they can eat some food? how about sending missionaries with bibles instead of just food? or do you mean covering up the sexual abuse of all those extra children? or do you mean refusing to pay taxes whilst still not only influencing, but outright dictating domestic policy in a nation that allows them tax exempt status for NOT engaging in the secular political process? which one of these things they do for the poor would you place in the "helping them" category?

oh, and btw, each and every question above is premised on the very factual, verified information which you requested earlier, and as such, constitutes references to the evidence you requested earlier. so...uh....

no, you're still not getting it. the burden of proof is not on me to prove that churches and their employees and their adherents hate the poor. the burden of proof is on them to prove they don't. see, there's no requirement that i grant that this is true merely b/c you claim it is true. i don't pander to theists. it's your job, if you wish to undertake it, to prove that these bishops care about the poor, and giving away other people's money doesn't even begin to rise to the level of proof. if i had access to all your money, and gave it to a charity, that wouldn't mean that i'm a nice guy, and the same holds for the bishops and for ALL theists.

really? you're unsure about this? 3 reasons:

1. religion (islam and judaism as well) fosters hatred and bigotry in their adherents

2. religion urges ppl to act, and those that are grown up enough to restrain themselves from violence apologize for the few that don't, instead of actively purging their ranks.

3. religion encourages you NOT to think.

and for the record: i'm not a disgruntled atheist. i'm just fed up with otherwise nice ppl letting figureheads brainwash them under the color of authority, especially since it's false authority. if there's a god, he/she/it can never be known in any significant way by ANY human being, since by definition, god would be completely, totally, and irrevocably beyond human comprehension. when ppl claim to speak for god, or to know what god wants b/c it's written in a 2,000 year old book of fairy tales, then proceed to use that supposed knowledge to justify hurting others, well, i get a bit miffed. Given that, my response, the rational response, is to tell you. or if you're not being nice, to insult you. but never, ever, to commit acts of violence against you--which is something your people aren't too worried about. and when i find atheists - who i call pseudoatheists, acting as if they were theists, i police them up as best i can. something which again, your ppl aren't too worried about.

not really, no. it's not a grandiose claim at all. for a great portion of human history we (as a race) believed that lightning was thrown about by Zeus, until we learned better. We also believed that to sail passed the limits of ancient maps was to fall off the earth, until we learned better.

The fact is, by definition, atheists use reason to not believe in god. these are mere statements of fact. Belief in god defies reason-many religious people admit as much--this is not per se an insult to anyone--unless ppl feel insulted that they are being called unreasonable when they are being unreasonable.

All these things are true. they are not grandiose at all. If you choose to believe you have that right for yourself--don't ask for me to respect both scientific inquiry and dogmatic belief--these two things contradict one another, i will not do it, i cannot do it, and i will not apologize for it.

Again, if this seems a grandiose statement, then it should be equally grandiose to suggest that the earth moves around the sun, and that i can explain at least the rudiments of electricity.

Sorry Doc, but the idea that religion and science can coexist, and that one does not negate the validity of the other, is BS. There's a distinct reason that the 'god of the gaps' argument is known to be fallacious reasoning. For every step forward in science, religion has to take a step back.

Furthermore, your article shows a distinct lack of background in the advances being made daily in neuroscience-which daily debunks spiritual 'phenomena' such as the 'sensed presence' effect. Really Dr. Zimmerman. I expect more from a PhD. At the very least i expect a modicum of intellectual honesty.

I don't think i require a PhD. of my own to state unequivocally that science seeks truth, and religion conceals it. I laud your efforts to achieve some sort of détente between those who advocate the search for knowledge and those who seek to conceal it at any cost, since i imagine such efforts are preliminary to the retirement of the 3 major religions as viable world-views, though i must raise the objection that we, as educated people more desirous of peace and good will than our theist "cousins", might in fact be engaging in a campaign of appeasement toward them-and appeasement does not work well, if it all.
